What Are Moles?

Moles are a common and typically harmless type of skin growth many people are born with. According to Mayo Clinic, they are usually oval or round in shape and can appear brown, tan, black, blue, red, or pink, according to Mayo Clinic. Most moles are less than ¼ inch in size but can be larger, especially for people with congenital moles.

Most people stop noticing new moles by age 50. However, it’s important to monitor your moles, even those you were born with. Moles can change over time, so you may want a doctor to look at certain moles.

Types
Types of Moles
There are three main types of moles. According to the National Cancer Institute, moles are usually categorized as common, dysplastic nevi, or melanoma.
Common moles
These moles are non-cancerous. You can be born with common moles or develop them throughout your life.
Dysplastic nevi
This type of mole typically has an irregular edge. They are non-cancerous but, in rare cases, may develop into melanoma.
Melanoma
Is a type of skin cancer. Often, the first sign of melanoma is a change to a mole you currently have or the growth of a new mole.
If you aren’t sure how to identify a new or existing mole, you may want to have a doctor check your skin. They can biopsy skin cells to determine whether your mole is benign or cancerous.

Look Out for Changes
to Your Moles

If your mole changes in size or shape, you may want to have a doctor assess your mole to be on the safe side. Changes to a mole that may indicate skin cancer include:

  • Asymmetrical shape.
  • Scalloped borders.
  • Color changes or uneven coloring.
  • New growth larger than ¼ inch.
  • Any other differences you’ve noticed in size, shape, color, or height

How Moles Are Removed

While some people remove skin-cancerous moles, others have their moles removed because they do not like the appearance. Regardless of which type of mole you have, we’re ready to work with you at Palm Beach Dermatology Group. When you call us, we can explain your options for mole removal and which route might be the best for you. Generally, you have a couple of options:

  • Surgical mole removal: We will numb the surface of your skin and use a scalpel to remove the mole from your skin’s surface. Your doctor may also want to remove some of your healthy skin for testing to ensure the mole has been entirely removed. However, this procedure is typically only done in cases where a mole is cancerous.
  • Shaving: You can have your mole shaved rather than cut off. This type of removal involves using a single or double-blade razor to shave your mole down to the same level as the rest of your skin.

Mole removal procedures are generally low risk. Bleeding and scarring are normal, and most scarring may not be noticeable. If your mole comes back after surgery, you may want to speak to your doctor about other ways to treat it.

Tips
Mole Prevention

You should always look for changes in your mole to ensure your skin is healthy. Conduct self-exams once a month to make sure your existing moles have not become irregular. Also, take note of any new moles and track how they progress.

A few ways you can protect your skin and prevent cancerous moles from forming include:

  • Using sunscreen: Wear sunscreen throughout the year, even on cloudy days or days when you won’t spend much time in the sun. We recommend you use at least SPF 15 on your face and body. Make sure you reapply if you plan to spend a lot of time outside.
  • Stay away from tanning beds: You should generally avoid tanning beds, as exposure to UV rays can increase your risk of developing cancerous moles.
  • Schedule outdoor activities around the sun’s rays: Try to stay out of the sun when the sun’s rays are the strongest. It may be best to spend time outside in the morning or evening. If you can’t avoid spending time outside, cover your skin and use sunscreen.
  • Cover your skin: Wear hats and long sleeves if you spend time outside.
